The Types of Ground Protection Matting & When to Use Them

Ground protection mats aren’t ‘one size fits all’. Mats vary in strength, cost, weight, convenience, and several other factors, meaning that the type of mat you get should be chosen to suit your needs.

There are a variety of different types of ground protection matting to fit a variety of uses, from film shoots to temporary roadways. Read on to find out which type of mat is best for which application.

Types of ground protection matting

EuroMats

EuroMats are relatively lightweight at only 35kg but can support loads of up to 80 tonnes. Their chevron traction surface reduces slippage in difficult weather conditions. They can also come with reflective markings and cats’ eyes to improve safety at night.

Euromats are easy to install and remove, which makes them good for short-term projects. Due to their weight and handholds, they can be easily moved by a two-person team. As they are relatively lightweight, they are ideal for protecting heritage or eco-sensitive areas, which may need extra care. They’re also a good option for pedestrian walkways and access, temporary roads and car parks, events, and more.

TuffTrak

It’s all in the name — TuffTrak mats are the tough and durable option for when you need something stronger. They can support a weight of up to 150 tonnes depending on ground conditions, and their chevron design reduces slippage for vehicles and machinery.

Despite their strength, TuffTrak mats are lighter than many alternative temporary road mats, making them easier and cheaper to transport. Like EuroMats, they can also protect eco-sensitive sites from any heavy machinery. Their strength makes them ideal for heavy-duty projects such as construction, oil and gas, infrastructure, and similar uses.

EconoMatMB

The EconoMatMB is a more affordable and lightweight ground protection mat that weighs 32kg and can support loads of up to 15 tonnes. These mats are designed as an alternative to plywood. The improved grip makes them safer to walk on, and their durability makes them the more eco-conscious option. Additionally, these mats are flexible, which makes them suitable for a variety of ground conditions.

Despite their lower load capacity than the aforementioned EuroMats and TuffTraks, EconoMatMB is still a great choice for construction, landscaping, maintenance, utilities, and events. The mat that bears the highest load isn’t always the best mat for the job, after all — it all depends on your requirements.

GeoGrid

Rather than a solid mat, GeoGrid uses cellular grids of polyethylene that help to stabilise and reinforce the ground underneath. For a more pleasant aesthetic and extra reinforcement, you can even fill the grids with stones, aggregate or even grass.

One area where GeoGrid excels is drainage. The cellular design makes it ideal for dispersing excess water in areas prone to flooding. Its efficient interlocking system means that installation is quick and easy, and at 1.6kg per mat, it is an incredibly lightweight option for uses such as driveways, pedestrian access, storage areas, and more.

OutRigger Pads

OutRigger Pads are the most specialised of all the options. Strong and durable, they provide a stable surface for outriggers in all weather conditions and on a variety of terrains. Additionally, they are lightweight, long-lasting, easy to install, and come in a wide range of sizes for added convenience.

OutRigger Pads are an essential part of crane hire due to the safety they provide, but they can also be used for other purposes such as scaffolding, skip hire or caravans.
